The Zebra is a very prized
game. Its head and body are 6.5-7.5 feet in length, and its tail is
18-22 inches long. A zebra's height at the shoulder is 3.5-4.5 feet, and
it weighs 550-750 pounds. Males are about 10% larger than females. The
zebra's coat has white and black stripes. The black stripes on its body
are wide and become broader and more horizontal toward its rear.
Normally, the body stripes extend to the mid-ventral line on the belly,
but some zebra's stripes extend down the legs to the hooves.
Occasionally, there are faint brown shadow stripes between the main
flank stripes. Zebras are the only plains animals that have both upper
and lower incisors. The zebra's eyesight is typical for an ungulate, or
hoofed mammal, while its sense of smell is good, and its hearing is
excellent. |
